The Newly Approved Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay for Presbyopia
Patients with problems focusing on nearby objects or print have a new option to correct this condition. The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay offers a safe, effective way to treat presbyopia, more commonly referred to as the aging eye condition. Consulting with your Houston eye surgeon can help you determine if the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is right for you. Here are some key facts to guide your decision regarding this advanced new eye care technique.
FDA Approved for Presbyopia Patients
The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay surgery procedure was developed by ReVision Optics, Inc., as an implantable device designed to improve vision for patients with presbyopia. ReVision Optics, Inc. is an established leader in the field of vision and maintains its headquarters in Lake Forest, California. The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay recently completed Phase III of the Food and Drug Administration approval process and is now approved for use throughout the United States. This procedure is only performed on the non-dominant eye, allowing patients to continue to enjoy clear distance vision while improving their close-up vision for reading and other routine activities.
What Is Presbyopia?
According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), a division of the National Institutes of Health, presbyopia is a natural result of the aging process and is caused by the hardening of the lens inside the eye. This can result in difficulty reading small print, seeing nearby objects and in headaches caused by this inability to focus on things close to you. The NEI indicates that people over 35 are at risk for this progressive condition, with those over 41 most likely to develop presbyopia.
Outstanding Results in Clinical Trials
Trials conducted on hundreds of patients showed impressive results in the treatment of presbyopia; 93 percent achieved 20/25 vision after undergoing the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay procedure. Glare and haloes were significantly reduced in comparison to other Houston eye surgery solutions for presbyopia, making this a solid choice for patients who must drive at night as part of their regular routine. The average patient was able to read five additional lines on a standard eye chart after undergoing the procedure without any degradation in their binocular distance vision. Studies have indicated a 95 percent satisfaction rate among patients who selected Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay for their vision correction.
How the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay Works
Rather than treating both eyes with corneal inlays, the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is used only on the non-dominant eye and is placed inside the cornea. The inlay is composed mostly of water and is absolutely comfortable.
- Your Houston eye surgeon will examine your eyes to ensure that they are healthy and that you are a good candidate for Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay surgery.
- A laser will use pinpoint accuracy to place a small incision in the surface of the cornea of the non-dominant eye.
- Your Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay will be inserted through the incision and placed into position.
- Once the tiny lens has had time to adhere to the cornea, the incision will close without any sutures and seals on its own just like LASIK. The patient can return to his or her regular activities.
In most cases, the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay procedure takes about 10 minutes to perform in an outpatient setting. It can also be combined with Houston LASIK surgery to correct other issues during the same procedure.
